OnePlus 16 Bets on 200MP and a Familiar 3x Sony

A Weibo leak on September 1 locked the OnePlus 16 camera at a 200MP 1/1.4-inch main sensor and a 3x Sony telephoto. Digital Chat Station, a regular OnePlus tipster, called the list the “final” setup, adding a new 50MP ultrawide and a 50MP front camera with autofocus.

The zoom camera is the tell. OnePlus is putting a 1/1.95-inch 50MP Sony sensor behind 3x optics, the same size it used on the OnePlus 13 and then dropped for a smaller 3.5x unit on the OnePlus 15.

A 200MP Main and a Familiar 3x Sony

Digital Chat Station’s September 1 post is the first time he has labeled a OnePlus 16 camera list as final. The main camera stays at 200MP on a 1/1.4-inch chip, the same size he floated in July, and one Chinese write-up of the post says that 200MP module is meant for this model alone in its sub-series.

Beside it sit a 50MP 3x telephoto on a 1/1.95-inch Sony sensor, a “brand-new” 50MP ultrawide with no named chip, and a 50MP selfie with autofocus. He also said the phone will inherit Oppo’s latest flagship imaging work, which is the software half of the wager: bigger glass plus the parent company’s current photo stack.

THE SEPTEMBER 1 CAMERA LIST

• Main camera: 200MP on a 1/1.4-inch sensor, unchanged from the July leak.
• Telephoto: 50MP Sony, 1/1.95-inch, 3x optical zoom, called a periscope in the post.
• Ultrawide: 50MP, described as brand-new, with no sensor name or size.
• Front camera: 50MP with autofocus, up from 32MP on the OnePlus 15.

Hadlee Simons, writing up the same Weibo post, said the 3x camera “seems identical” to the OnePlus 13’s and that earlier 200MP telephoto leaks “weren’t accurate.” Aperture, focal length, and the exact Sony part number still are not in the leak, so identical remains a size-and-brand match, not a teardown.

The OnePlus 15 Paid for Smaller Sensors

The 16 list only reads as a bet if you remember what OnePlus shipped last October. The OnePlus 15 used 50MP sensors on all three rear cameras and still cut the physical size of each one versus the OnePlus 13. Reviewers treated that as the camera story of the year for the brand, and not kindly.

GSMArena’s camera write-up said the hardware had been “notably downgraded,” with smaller sensors on every rear camera, tighter apertures on the main and telephoto, and a narrower ultrawide field of view. The 15 did add 3.5x optical zoom and autofocus on the 32MP selfie, and it asked software to cover the rest.

ONEPLUS 13 TO 16 CAMERA HARDWARE

Read across the telephoto row and the 16 is not a new zoom idea. It is the 13’s sensor size coming back after a one-year detour into a smaller 3.5x Samsung chip.

The Main Camera Shrinks, Then Swells

The OnePlus 13’s main camera was already a 1/1.4-inch 50MP Sony LYT-808 with an f/1.6 lens. The 15 stepped that down to a 1/1.56-inch IMX906 and f/1.8. The 16 leak puts the format back at 1/1.4 inches and multiplies the pixel count by four, to 200MP.

More pixels on the same diagonal means smaller photosites unless OnePlus bins them in the default shot, which every 200MP phone does. The leak does not name the sensor maker. Sony’s current 200MP LYTIA 901 is a 1/1.12-inch part, so a 1/1.4-inch 200MP chip is unlikely to be that one, and Digital Chat Station did not fill in the blank.

Zoom Reach Loses to Sensor Size

The 15’s telephoto was a 50MP Samsung ISOCELL JN5 at 1/2.76 inches, f/2.8, 85mm equivalent, with 3.5x optical zoom and a 7x in-viewfinder crop. Daylight shots from that module came out sharper than the hardware suggested, but early review testing found 7x after dark turned waxy, which is what a small sensor does when you crop it.

On the 13, OnePlus had used a 50MP Sony LYT-600 at 1/1.95 inches, 73mm, f/2.6, 3x, in a triprism module it said was 24% flatter and 30% lighter than the OnePlus 12’s periscope. That is the size class the 16 leak just restored. Sony still lists a 50MP LYTIA 600 in 1/1.95-inch form with 0.8μm pixels, and the company’s public sheet also flags all-pixel autofocus for mobile sensors on that chip.

Why Did the 3.5x Periscope Disappear?

Two months ago the same leaker said the 16 would pair the 200MP main with a 3.5x “small-sensor” periscope and a 50MP “small-sensor” ultrawide. That would have been the 15’s zoom idea with a bigger wide camera. The September post kills that path. Optical reach goes back to 3x, and the sensor grows.

The OnePlus 15 was a bit of a disappointment on the camera front compared to the OnePlus 13.

That disappointment is the reason a recycled 3x Sony module can still be a wager. OnePlus spent a year asking DetailMax, a 26MP fusion mode, and a 7x crop toggle to make a smaller 3.5x sensor look flagship. The 16 leak says the company would rather give the zoom camera more silicon and live with 3x as the native step, the same step Apple, Google, and the OnePlus 13 already treat as the portrait length.

The cost is reach. A 3.5x optical start is closer to 7x hybrid than a 3x start is. People who buy phones to stand on a sideline and punch in will feel that. People who shoot indoors at 73mm-class portraits will get the larger 1/1.95-inch chip back, which is the shot the 13 was praised for and the 15 made harder after dark.

Digital Chat Station Walks Back the Zoom

The September list did not appear from nowhere. For most of 2026 the 16’s camera rumor was a 200MP periscope, then a 200MP main, then a 3.5x small-sensor zoom. The “final” post is the third rewrite of the same phone.

THE CAMERA LEAK TRAIL

1. December 30, 2025: Digital Chat Station says the OnePlus 16 will carry a 200MP sensor and share main and telephoto hardware with Oppo’s Find N6, as the Find N5 and OnePlus 15 shared 50MP main and telephoto chips.
2. May 7, 2026: He reiterates a 200MP periscope telephoto, with a 50MP primary and 50MP ultrawide around it, plus a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro (SM8975) and a battery up to 9,000mAh.
3. June 5, 2026: A later post keeps 200MP on the main and cuts the telephoto to 50MP, ending the dual-200MP version of the rumor.
4. July 2026: The same account describes a 200MP 1/1.4-inch main, a 3.5x small-sensor periscope, and a 50MP small-sensor ultrawide.
5. September 1, 2026: He posts the “final” list: 200MP 1/1.4-inch main, 50MP 3x 1/1.95-inch Sony, new 50MP ultrawide, 50MP autofocus selfie, Oppo flagship imaging.

Those swings are how a factory actually closes a camera bill of materials. A 200MP periscope is expensive, thick, and power-hungry. A small 3.5x unit is cheap and already tooled from the 15. A 1/1.95-inch 3x Sony is a known good module OnePlus already shipped, which is why the last turn looks conservative next to the May headline and still larger than what is in shops now.

Oppo’s Flagship Imaging Stack Rides Along

Hardware is only half of what Digital Chat Station described. He said the 16 will take Oppo’s current flagship imaging algorithms, which matters because OnePlus spent 2025 pulling the Hasselblad name off the camera and replacing it with its own code. On September 4, 2025, the company introduced its DetailMax Engine after Hasselblad and wrote that a great camera is not about stacking specs or adding the biggest lens.

The 15 then shipped smaller sensors and asked DetailMax to fuse 12MP frames with a 50MP frame into 26MP stills. GSMArena found the 26MP mode often looked softer than the 12MP default and called it a gimmick on the main camera. If the 16 really takes Oppo’s latest flagship pipeline, that is a different lab than the one that had to paper over the 15.

The selfie is the clean upgrade on paper. The 13’s 32MP front camera was fixed focus. The 15’s 32MP Sony IMX709 already added autofocus. The 16 leak’s 50MP autofocus selfie is a megapixel jump, not the first time OnePlus has focused a front camera. Anyone treating “AF selfie” as the new trick is a year late.

WHAT THE SOFTWARE BET STILL HAS TO DO

• Match three rear cameras: The 15’s ultrawide already drifted in color versus the main and telephoto, so a “new” 50MP ultrawide has to land on the same tone curve.
• Use 200MP without the 26MP mess: Default output still has to look like a finished photo, not a pixel-count demo.
• Keep 3x useful past 3x: The 13’s 6x in-sensor crop and AI telephoto were how a 3x module competed with longer glass, and the 16 will need that again if 3.5x is gone.
• Grade video with the stills: The 15 could do 4K at 120fps in Dolby Vision on the main and telephoto; a new stack that only fixes stills would waste the Sony zoom.

Those numbers on the OnePlus 13 3x Sony telephoto spec sheet are the baseline the 16 now has to beat: 50MP, 1/1.95-inch, 0.8μm, 73mm equivalent, f/2.6, 3x optical, up to 120x digital. Until OnePlus publishes apertures for the 16, that sheet is the closest public description of the zoom camera it appears to be putting back in.

China Gets the Camera Phone the West Won’t

The camera list lands in a smaller market than the last two flagships. On July 16, 2026, OnePlus said it will not launch new products in the United States or Europe. James Paterson, Oppo’s senior PR manager in Europe, said software updates and after-sale support “will be guaranteed” in both regions, and that existing phones will move from OxygenOS to ColorOS. Nicole Okpokiri, an Oppo PR representative, said only that “OnePlus’ product roadmap in China remains unchanged.”

The OnePlus 15 was the last flagship the company sold in the US. Digital Chat Station has pointed the 16 at an October China launch, after an earlier September target slipped because the late-September calendar is packed. OnePlus China president Li Jie already talked about the 16 at Qualcomm’s gaming event on July 30, which is as close as the company has come to putting a name on the next phone.

Earlier tips still hanging off the same account, and not part of the September 1 camera post, include a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro (SM8975), a battery around 9,000mAh, and a high-refresh flat screen. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit is set for September 22 to 24 in Maui, which is the obvious place for the chip’s public name to show up, about a month before a China phone launch.

If the September list holds, OnePlus is spending its last widely watched flagship cycle putting light back into the zoom camera it shrank a year ago, and putting 200 million pixels on the wide camera it also shrank. The people who argued about those 15 photos in American and European reviews will watch that bet from outside the store.
