Why advertise with TL TALK RADIO
TL TALK RADIO is a free, independent general-news site read by people who come for business and the economy, politics, health, science and technology, entertainment, sport and world news. Advertising is what keeps the site free, and we would rather say that plainly than pretend the news pays for itself. If you want to reach an engaged, broad news audience, there is space here for you, on terms we can both stand behind.
Everything on this page is written so that a buyer knows exactly what they are getting and, just as important, what they are not. What they are not getting is any say over our journalism. That is the deal, and it is not up for negotiation.
What we sell
Most of our inventory is standard display advertising across the site, filled two ways. The bulk is programmatic, bought through the usual advertising exchanges, where an automated auction places advertisements against our pages. A smaller amount is sold directly to advertisers who want a specific placement, a campaign over a set period, or a package we can tailor. We also offer, in limited quantity:
- Clearly labelled sponsored posts, which carry a visible label identifying them as paid content so no reader mistakes them for our reporting.
- Newsletter sponsorship, where your message runs in an edition marked as sponsored.
- Direct display placements and simple, tasteful campaigns agreed in advance.
We do not sell native advertising dressed up to look like a news story, we do not sell placement inside our reporting, and we do not sell our readers’ personal data. How reader data is handled sits in our privacy policy, and the cookies advertising uses are described in our cookie policy.
The line advertising does not cross
Buying space here buys space here and nothing else. It buys no coverage, no softer treatment, and no warning of a story to come. If your company becomes the subject of a story, we will report it as we would any other, and the fact that you advertise with us will be disclosed in that story rather than hidden. Requests to pull, delay or soften accurate coverage are refused, and our corrections policy says the same. The separation between the money and the newsroom is described in full on our ownership and funding page.
This works in your favour more than it might first seem. A reader trusts a site whose reporting cannot be bought, and an advertisement next to trusted journalism is worth more than one next to content readers have learned to ignore.
What we will not run
We turn away advertising that would embarrass us next to the news, and the list is not negotiable. We refuse:
- Advertising that is misleading, fraudulent, or promotes scams, fake cures or get-rich-quick schemes.
- Political or issue advertising that hides who is paying for it.
- Content promoting hatred, discrimination, or violence against people.
- Illegal products and services, and adult content that has no place on a general news site.
- Malicious advertising, auto-playing audio, disruptive interstitials, and anything that carries malware or degrades the reading experience.
- Advertising aimed at children, and creative that has no business next to a serious story.
On programmatic inventory we apply category blocks and filters to keep this list enforced, and where something slips through the automated auction anyway, tell us and we will block it. We would rather lose the revenue than run something our readers should not have seen.
Labelling, and telling advertising from news
Anything paid for is labelled as such, visibly, in language a reader actually understands. Sponsored content says it is sponsored. This is not a courtesy we might drop under commercial pressure, it is a rule that our editorial standards hold, because the whole value of the site depends on a reader always knowing whether they are reading our judgement or someone’s advertisement.
Getting in touch
To discuss advertising, sponsorship or a partnership, write to support@tltalkradio.org with ADVERTISING at the front of the subject line. Tell us what you want to promote, the sort of campaign you have in mind, and your rough timing and budget, and the business side will get back to you. These enquiries are handled away from the newsroom, which is the whole point. Other ways to reach us are on our contact page.
