Snapchat Plans Keeps the Hangout Inside the Chat
Snapchat Plans ships event invites as one-on-one chats, a closed hangout tool aimed at stopping leaks to Partiful, Apple Invites, and group texts.
Snapchat Plans, introduced on September 10, 2026, sends hangout invites through one-on-one chats so the plan never has to leave the app. Guests tap Going, Maybe, or Can’t Go in the same thread, and a My Plans tab on the profile keeps the date, the guest list, and a Bitmoji cover in one place.
The pitch is easier weekends. The product choice is narrower: stop the moment a Snapchat chat becomes a real meetup from leaking into Partiful, Apple Invites, or a group text.
Snapchat Plans Puts the Invite Inside Chat
Snap Inc. said IRL meet-ups start as a message that turns into an idea, then a plan, then time spent together. It built Plans as a way to create, share, and manage their real-world plans without opening another app, and it pointed to its own survey: 35% of recently surveyed U.S. Snapchatters ages 13 to 24 already use group chat to make plans and organize events.
IRL meet-ups often start from a simple spark of conversation: A message turns into an idea, an idea turns into a plan, and time spent together becomes a memory.
Snap Inc., newsroom post, September 10, 2026
A host adds a title, a date, and a time, then invites up to 200 friends. Dynamic Bitmoji cover art updates as people answer. Invites land in a one-on-one chat with each guest, who can change an RSVP later. Hosts can add more people or edit details after the fact. Snapchat sends a reminder 1 hour before the start time.
A new My Plans section on a profile lists current, upcoming, and past events. Open a Friendship Profile and an Our Plans block shows only the events the two of you share. Snap says the events are private and invite-only, though every guest can see the full guest list.
The company is also building a way to create an event from inside a chat, which it has not shipped yet. That is the version that would catch the plan at the exact second someone types “Saturday?” instead of making the host leave the thread, open a profile, and tap New Plan.
A One-on-One Ping Instead of a Group Thread
The 35% figure is about group chat. The shipping product does not put the invite back into that group. Each guest gets a private ping, answers there, and the headcount lives on a dedicated object the group thread never had to hold.
That split is the leak-stopper. A group chat about Saturday still dumps the time, the “who’s in,” and the address into a scroll of jokes, photos, and side plots. The usual fix is to screenshot the mess, paste it into iMessage or WhatsApp, or bounce everyone to a link. Plans takes the RSVP out of that pile and parks it on the profile, so the next open of Snapchat is also a check of who is coming.
It is already live. People have already fired test invites for chores as small as watering a garden, which is a dull way to prove the taps work and a useful one: the object exists even when the “event” is a joke. The closed graph is the point. This is for people you already chat with, not a board for strangers looking for a Tuesday run club.
Partiful Already Sends the Link by Text
Young hosts who want a pretty page, a guest wall, and a reminder that does not live in a chat already have somewhere to go. Partiful lets a host design an invite and send it by text or email, and guests can RSVP in a browser without installing anything. The page takes a date, a location, and a start time. Comments, photos, polls, waitlists, and a shared album sit on that same page, and the company says the core tools are free.
Apple spent February 4, 2025, launching Apple Invites, a separate iPhone app that lets iCloud+ subscribers create custom invitations for any occasion. Anyone can RSVP on the web, even without an Apple Account. The card can carry a home address in the preview, and the App Store listing says maps and weather are added automatically. Guests also get a Shared Album and, with Apple Music, a collaborative playlist.
Snapchat Plans does not try to beat those products at posters, playlists, or open links. It tries to make them unnecessary for the kind of plan that starts in a Snapchat thread, which is most of the plans Snap actually sees.
HOW THE THREE INVITES COMPARE
| Piece of the hangout | Snapchat Plans | Partiful | Apple Invites |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where the invite arrives | One-on-one Snapchat chat | Text, email, or a link | A link on any messenger, plus web |
| Does a guest need the app? | Yes, Snapchat | No | No, web RSVP is enough |
| What it costs to host | Included in Snapchat | Free, per Partiful | iCloud+ to create the invite |
| Place on the card | Not in the first version | Date, location, and start time | Maps and weather on the invite |
| Who can see it | Invite-only; guests see the full list | Public or private pages | Host controls what the preview shows |
| Guest cap | 200 friends | Guests need no account | Anyone can RSVP |
A Partiful link works for mixed iPhone and Android groups and for the cousin who will never download Snapchat. Apple’s web RSVP does the same for relatives off iCloud+. Snapchat Plans only works on Snapchat, for people who are already friends there, which is a smaller door and a tighter hold on the session.
What a Snapchat Plan Can and Cannot Do
Snapchat Support walks through a short create flow that starts on your profile or on a friend’s Friendship Profile, not in the camera. Where the feature is on, the old Countdown tool is finished as a creator: you can still see old Countdowns, but you cannot make new ones.
WHAT YOU CAN SET TODAY
- Title and clock: Add a name, a date, and a time, or switch on All Day.
- The guest list: Invite from the Plan, up to 200 friends, each of whom gets a chat ping.
- The RSVP: Going, Maybe, or Can’t Go, with a later change allowed.
- The cover: Bitmoji art that updates as answers come in.
- The reminder: An automatic ping 1 hour before the start time.
- Shared history: Our Plans on a Friendship Profile shows only events both of you were invited to.
What you cannot set is the one field a map company should have had on day one. The newsroom copy lists title, date, time, and attendees. It does not list a place. A Snap spokesperson said the company is “actively working on” adding location info, and did not say whether that pin will use Snap Map.
Group chats and Snap Map already help people find each other in the real world. Plans is the missing RSVP object those surfaces never grew. Until the address lives on that object, the last useful line of the invite still has to be typed into the chat Plans was supposed to clean up.
92 Million Daily Users, and a 7% Drop
Snap does not need another camera filter as much as it needs a reason for its richest users to open the app again tomorrow. In the second quarter of 2026, daily active users reached 493 million, up 5% from a year earlier, and monthly active users reached 971 million, Evan Spiegel, co-founder and chief executive, said with the results.
THE USER BASE PLANS HAS TO HOLD
- Global daily users: 493 million in Q2 2026, up 5% year over year.
- North America daily users: 92 million, down 7% year over year, flat with the prior quarter.
- North America ARPU: $10.26 in that quarter, far above the rest of the user base.
- Revenue around those users: $1,599 million, up 19% year over year.
North America is the expensive room. A hangout that starts in Snapchat and finishes in iMessage is a session Snap does not get back at 7 p.m., when the reminder would have been its own. Plans is a small object with a large job: make the next tap happen inside Snapchat, in the region where each daily user is worth the most.
Spiegel, on the Q2 results, said the company grew revenue 19%, widened margins, and threw off cash while it worked on the core business and on direct revenue. He also said Snap remains focused on serving those 971 million monthly active users. A profile tab that fills with Saturdays is a blunt way to keep that focus visible between Snaps.
Countdowns Are Done Where Plans Arrive
Plans is not Snap’s first timer for a night out. Snapchat Support now states that Countdowns are being replaced by Plans, which have more functions. If Plans is available in a region, old Countdowns still appear, but new ones cannot be created.
A Countdown was a ticking badge. A Plan is a record: who was asked, who answered, what the cover looked like, and what you shared with one friend. That is a different bet for an app that made its name on things that vanish. The hangout, once it has a date and a guest list, is supposed to stay findable.
Some of the people who watch the stock wanted Snap to buy Partiful and import a party graph. Building the tool inside chat does the opposite. The guest list cannot be reused on a public explore page, cannot be texted to a number that is not a friend, and cannot become a discovery feed. The graph stays closed, which is worse for finding new people and better for keeping the next RSVP on Snapchat.
Snap Still Has to Add a Place
Snap Map already has scale the new feature is ignoring. In the first quarter of 2026, Snap said the map had more than 450 million monthly users. Arrival pings, friend dots, and place visits are already how a lot of Snapchatters notice that a night is happening. Plans, as shipped, does not hook the invite to that map.
WHAT WE KNOW
- Shipped: Title, date, time, 200-person invites, 1:1 RSVP, Bitmoji covers, My Plans, Our Plans, and a 1-hour reminder.
- Privacy: Invite-only, with the full guest list visible to everyone who was asked.
- Replacement: Countdowns stop being creatable in regions where Plans is on.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- Location: A spokesperson said Snap is actively working on a place field; Snap Map may or may not be the pin.
- In-chat create: Promised as coming soon, not in the first tap path.
- Reach: Support still frames the swap from Countdowns as regional.
The louder gap is the missing place. Apple puts a map on the card. Partiful asks for the address before the link goes out. Snap shipped the RSVP and the profile tab first, which is the layer that stops you from opening another app, and left the pin for later, which is the layer that actually gets someone to a door.
Until that pin exists, the last line of the hangout still has to be typed into a regular chat, and that is the same leak Plans was built to close.
